STUDIO SOGONGWON

(Close)

Sogongwon means “a small park.” Even on a busy day, when you spend time in a park, the scenes around you slowly come into focus. You might watch quietly and imagine a story, frame a scene in your mind, or picture it differently. Sometimes you simply linger without thinking; other times, you find yourself in an old memory or imagining a time yet to come. Even without a camera in hand, inspiration gathers little by little.

The name Sogongwon comes from a park where I used to walk my dog every day, back when I ran a leather workshop near the Gyeongui Line Forest Park in Yeonnam-dong. The workshop’s name eventually became the name of the studio where I now create photographs and films. The place has changed, but the time spent finding inspiration in moments of ease remains at the heart of Sogongwon.

Over the past decade or so since I began working in photography, I’ve gradually learned the craft. I’ve spent even longer drawing, imagining, and making things. The time I spent taking detours and finding my way has taught me to see a scene from different angles and at different moments. I’ve learned that the same subject can become an entirely different image depending on where, when, and how you look at it.

When working with a brand, I first take time to understand the story it wants to tell. I seek to understand what must be preserved while staying open to the possibilities within the image. As we talk and explore different approaches, our sensibilities gradually come closer, and our perspectives find their way naturally into the image. Together, we find the scenes that feel right for each project.
